Is Flossing good for children? When should a child start flossing?

Flossing is a part of the oral hygiene routine for both children and adults. These are some things in life that become hard to teach your child. But as parents, ensure that it becomes a lifetime habit to have sound oral health for a lifetime.

Flossing is essential for children when their teeth start to make a fit in the mouth. It is necessary to establish good habits of flossing in children early in life. If they start doing this early, it sets in their behaviour and continues throughout their life. It helps in maintaining good health of teeth and gums in children.

When should a child start Flossing?

You should start flossing as a part of their daily routine as soon as your child enters pre-school. When the child’s teeth begin to set close together for plaque, it is time to start flossing and maintain damage control in the teeth health. Mostly, the best time to start flossing is when the baby’s teeth begin to fit closely together. This process usually takes place between the ages of 2-6. If your child faces any problem, then connect with your dentist instantly.

You can teach your child to do flossing independently, which will benefit the child in the long run. Take at least 18 inches of floss and wrap it around the middle finger. Then gently floss up and down around the teeth in the c-shape. Do not jam the floss into their gums. You can buy a soft floss that will not hurt the child.

Reward your children for sticking them to the habit of flossing for life. For older kids, you can even use flavoured floss to make them indulge in good oral health practices. Some parents create a family chart and make flossing a fun game rather than a task. Keep reminding your children of the benefits of good oral health and the ways to maintain it.

Although baby teeth will fall out eventually, it is still very crucial to keep them healthy. It is the right time to make your child build some good dental health. You can turn it into a bedtime routine and make them sleep with a clean mouth. There are tremendous benefits of flossing after the permanent teeth form in the mouth. Regular flossing helps you get rid of food debris which can turn into plaque if the waste stays longer in the child’s mouth.

Flossing can do wonders in dental health, such as it can prevent cavities, gum diseases and bad breath. Keep checking the mouth of the child to avoid any plaque accumulation or any other dental problems.
